Gippsland Lakes 6 days/5 nights
Day 1. Arrive at Matador Motel, Sale from 2.00 pm. The afternoon is yours to explore the Port of Sale precinct renowned for its Art Galleries. In the evening we have arranged a “Welcome” dinner at Star Hotel, walking distance from our motel. Jock your captain and his friendly crew will provide you with information about your cruise and the entire Lakes region that you will be visiting.
Day 2. Enjoy a buffet breakfast before a short walk to the Historic Port of Sale. Board the “Spirit II” to commence your 4-day exploration of the Gippsland Lakes. Cruise down the man made 2.5-km channel that joins to the Thomson River. At the junction of the Thomson and La Trobe rivers we will stop at the spectacular, nineteen-century swing bridge. This historic swing bridge has been fully restored. Cruise further down the La Trobe River and into Lake Wellington. Enjoy lunch onboard as we cruise past Marley Point, the starting point of the famous Marley Point overnight sailing race. View abundant bird life as we cruise along the Perry and Avon Rivers. Return back to Lake Wellington; cruise across the Lake to the entrance of McLennans Strait, where there are extensive wetlands that are important bird habitats. Enter the McLennan’s Strait and cruise along this channel of water that connects Lake Wellington to Lake Victoria before stopping at the small Lake side village of Hollands Landing. Coach transfer to Paynesville for overnight accommodation, dinner and breakfast.
Day 3. Coach from Paynesville back to Hollands Landing. Cruise by the holiday village of Loch Sport then across Lake Victoria to Wattle Point for a BBQ lunch, take in the beauty of the large banksia shrubs in flower. After lunch we will cruise to Sperm Whale Head Jetty at Point Wilson, a great place to see many of the wildlife that abounds the area. Cruise along Bunga Arm to Ocean Grange where we will stop to take a walk across to 90-mile beach a good place to observe shore and ocean birds such as shearwaters, terns and gulls. Our day will end with the return cruise along Bunga Arm to our overnight accommodation at Paynesville.
Day 4. This morning we will cruise along some of the many canals in Payneville before travelling across Lake King to the Tambo River, take in the beauty of this gently flowing river with excellent bird watching opportunities. Cruise to the town of Johnsonville before travelling back down stream and onto the Nicholson River where we will stop for lunch at the Nicholson Hotel. In the afternoon we will cruise back down to Lake King before cruising across to Eagle Point to view the magnificent natural formation of silt jetties – the second longest in the world. Cruise along the Mitchell River view the beauty of this ever-changing river before stopping at Bairnsdale for coach transfer back to Paynesville for dinner, bed and breakfast.
Day 5. Coach transfer back to Bairnsdale. Cruising down the Mitchell River and across Lake King to Metung for lunch and time to explore this tiny village. In the afternoon we will complete our cruise travelling along the Reeves Channel and onto the town of Lakes Entrance for accommodation and a farewell dinner.
Day 6. After breakfast we bid farewell to Jock and his crew. Board the coach for transfers back to Sale stopping at the Railway station and car parking facilities.
