The Gippsland Lakes area was originally a delta formed by inflowing rivers depositing silt. The silt and action of Bass Strait currents created a series of barriers separating the delta from the sea so forming a lake system. Inflows from the rivers would cause these barriers to be breached from time to time forming channels to the sea until a permanent channel was constructed at Lakes Entrance.
The system consists of 3 main lakes supported by incoming river flows and are known for the scenic channels, islands, wetland flora and birdlife.
An opportunity to explore the extensive network of marshes, lakes and rivers of the protected Gippsland Lakes on a small group cruise. The Gippsland Lakes support a diverse range of native vegetation and wild-life, boating activities and charming towns. This cruise covers almost 240 kilometres of the lakes and associated rivers.
